Narrative
While I have had limited exposure to this competency, I do realize the value of understanding how policy is developed and the ways in which laws, university policies, and governance structures impact our work and our interactions with others.
As an academic advisor, I work within the confines of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) each time I interact with students, parents, and staff. This act was designated to protect the privacy of educational records and affords students certain rights with respect to their education records.
The course, CSP 6010- Foundations and Functions of College Student Personnel, also included information that helped me to develop in this competency area.
In my fundraising work at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, I gained experience in working with our law director when working on event contracts at venues where alcohol was going to be present. There were particular policies that we needed to ensure were in place to protect the hospital from liability.
